Caripan

The Festival will form part of CARIFESTA VIII and will be the first in an experiment to involve countries other than the host country, Suriname.

The Festival will be held in recognition of the International Day of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition that will be celebrated by UNESCO at the same time.

The Festival, on this occasion, will be dedicated to drug awareness with its theme "Get High on the Music". The Test Piece "Watch Out My Children" is the United Nations theme song for action programs against illicit drugs appropriately selected.

There will be competitions for Orchestras, Soloists, Duets & Quartets and bands from all 10 CARIPAN member countries are expected to contend for the various prizes at stake.

This is the second Steelpan event of a Caribbean nature organised by CARIPAN. The first one was held in St. George's Grenada, on December 1st, 2001. This historic first Caribbean Panorama featured the big names in Caribbean steel pan music and the competition was won by Exodus from Trinidad & Tobago, with WITCO Desperadoes (T&T) placing second and GBC New Dimension of Grenada placing third.
